Jon Metzger has completed a second recording with the John Brown Jazz Orchestra for a future release on Brown Boulevard Records. Metzger is once again a featured soloist on this new session together with Cyrus Chestnut, piano, Brad Leali, alto, Vincent Gardner, trombone, and Herlin Riley, drums, among others.

Jon Metzger's original collection, Five Easy Two-Mallet Pieces for Solo Marimba, has been selected by the University Interscholastic League, the largest inter-school organization of its kind deciding which compositions students perform at competitions including All-State.

Jon Metzger has completed a new book chapter for a forth-coming biography of vibist Lem Winchester by Scott Davidson called The Bop Cop. Metzger's chapter is an analysis and a listening guide of the seven original compositions recorded by Winchester before a gun accident ended his career. The book is scheduled for an August, 2012 publication.

Jon Metzger appears on a new CD recording by tenor saxophonist Jack Wilkins called The Blue and Green Project. Recorded in Tampa, FL, and released on Summit Records, the recording includes Wilkins' original material inspired by Southern Appalachia and features Metzger together with Danny Gottlieb, drums, Tom Brantley, trombone, Per Danielsson, piano, and Corey Christianson, guitar, among others.

Jon Metzger appears on a new recording with guitarist Baron Tymas called Insight at Midnight. Supported by a grant from the NC Arts Council and called "a sterling set of straight ahead jazz" by Jazziiz Magazine, the recording also features Ed Paolantonio, piano, John Brown, bass, and Kofi Burbridge, flute, among others.

07.28.09Jon Metzger Completes Cultural Envoy Service

Jon Metzger served as a Cultural Envoy for the United States Embassy in Ankara, Turkey for the month of May, 2009. Metzger was selected by the US State Department's Office of Educational and Cultural Programs to work with the music faculty at the Conservatory at Haceteppe State University on the formation of their new Jazz Studies Program. He also gave improvisation and jazz pedagogy workshops, jazz performance masterclasses, and numerous concerts at the Conservatory in Ankara as well as at the Conservatory in Izmir.

A new signature mallet developed by Jon Metzger and Pro-Mark for jazz vibraphone use is now available from Pro-Mark. "The weight, balance, and feel are perfect for my hand," Metzger says about the new mallet. "This mallet gives me the full depth of tone I'm seeking from the vibes while still allowing for the touch and control of subtle twists and turns that are also important to making the instrument sing. The mallet is great for two- and four-mallet use," he adds.
